You need a Latex Mattress. If you wake up with pains in your hips or shoulders, then no other mattress will do. If you can get a 100% Latex Mattress even better!
You can try Memory Foam, but it won’t work as well as Latex.
Important: Whatever you do don’t buy an Innerspring Mattress.
Avoid the spring mattresses
I know you see spring mattresses everywhere and they are the most common and the most affordable mattresses on the market. Most people who suffer from pain in the hip from waking up normally have an innerspring mattress.
If this is you, then you need to abandon that bed and get yourself a Latex mattress.
Don’t be fooled! Many mattress manufacturers will try to make a spring mattress seem soft by placing a pillow top on it. This is only a band-aid on the problem. The pillow top will eventually flatten out and get saggy with time. This sagginess will only cause you more pain.
The springs in the mattress also create pressure points that are not supportive to side sleepers. Think of these points as cylinders that are pushing on your body and not giving even support. You need a mattress that is soft and cradles your body.
The springs are the worst at giving support to your waist. Over time where you lay your hips, the springs will wear out and contort your spine out of alignment. This is what gives the horrible aches.
Another factor about spring mattresses is that they can be too firm. Too firm of a mattress and you don’t get the dip that you need for your hips and shoulders.
What you need to get
What you need is a soft but supportive mattress. What we have found to work the best are Latex Mattresses.
The reason why Latex is the better option is that many of the people who have hip pains or shoulder pains had a Spring Mattress beforehand. When they made the change to a Memory Foam, they did not like it. Getting in and out of memory foam beds is a lot harder as it doesn’t have the springiness like their old mattress. Everyone likes the Latex better because it has some springiness to it that everyone is used to.
Just like memory foam, latex is very supportive and soft enough for side sleepers. There are many different styles of latex – Natural, Synthetic, or Blends of Latex materials.
Natural Latex is often the most sought out since it’s ECO-friendly and doesn’t have the harsh effects other options have. Natural Latex doesn’t have that weird new mattress smell that you expect from foam mattresses. Also, Natural Latex comes from a renewable source, the rubber tree.
The biggest benefit is that a Latex mattress will sleep cooler than a memory foam mattress. No one ever tells you that some memory foam beds do sleep warm. To be honest, some GEL Memory Foam beds do sleep cooler than the standard memory foam.
The Downside of Latex: There is only one downside to a Latex Mattress, and that is cost. Generally, latex is going to cost a bit more than spring or memory foam beds.
The Good News: The good news is that you can get Latex Mattresses at affordable prices so long as you avoid the retail stores. When you buy online, you avoid all the costly markup that retail locations have. The best part is that the mattress you buy online gets shipped to your door step! No need to worry about getting the bed home from a retail store.
Where do you buy the Latex mattresses? When purchasing a mattress online, you have to heavily rely on reviews and sites like this one to help guide you. I know that it can be overwhelming, so I have a little list below on the Latex Mattresses I recommend.

What about Memory Foam?
If Latex is a bit too much, then a Memory Foam will be the next best option.
Just like latex, memory foam is very supportive and shapes to the body very well. You don’t have to worry about any pressure since the foam just cradles your body the best way possible. Almost like sleeping on a soft cloud!
You can’t just buy any memory foam mattress. You need one that is cooling.
I know this can make it sound like sleeping on a memory foam bed is like sleeping on a hot plate. They’re not that hot to sleep on. It’s all about the air flow and memory foam is so dense that it doesn’t allow as much air through it compared to a spring mattress.
Many of the sleeping warm problems can be solved by a cooling topper or cooling mattress protector. The topper can make a mattress softer or harder depending on what material you buy. While the mattress protector can keep the same feel of the bed but allows better air flow and gives protection too.
No matter what you do, you should always buy a mattress protector. Mattress protectors have come a long way, and they’re not the plastic vinyl ones you’re thinking of. Many of the mattress protectors like this one feel just like a regular bed sheet.
Just like Latex: You want to avoid buying your memory foam mattress from a retail store. The biggest reason is that they have higher margins due to having a physical store. The truth is that you can purchase a memory foam bed online and not have to deal with the hassles of salespeople and come out ahead.
A Good General Purpose One: I consider the Tuft & Needle bed to be the good-all-around memory foam bed. It doesn’t get too warm, and the comfort falls between a latex and memory foam mattress.
Other options: I know you’re looking at this part because of price. Even though the Tuft & Needle is a great price for a memory foam mattress, you might be wondering what other options are out there? I have listed some of the memory foam beds that I would recommend you check out. Of course just like the latex, it’s best to look at the reviews and see what others are saying about it to see how it will fit your needs the best.

How are they shipped?
You might be wondering how they ship an entire mattress to your doorstep? What most mattress manufacturers do is that they compress the entire mattress and place it in a box. This box, of course, is smaller than the actual mattress.
This cuts down on shipping cost and makes it so much easier to get the bed in small places or to get it upstairs. Make sure you get someone to help move the mattress; they’re heavy.
When you open the box, the mattress is wrapped in an airtight plastic. Place the mattress where you want it and start to open the wrapping carefully.
The mattress will begin to expand or inflate to its correct size. Every manufacturer is different so make sure you read the directions to see how long it takes for it to expand.
What you don’t want to do is keep the mattress in the box for too long (we’re talking days). It’s best to get the mattress out of its packaging as soon as possible.
Just like any other mattress you’ll want to break it in and give it a few weeks to get used to your body. You’ll also want yourself to get used to it too. Keep in mind that you spent years sleeping on a bad mattress so your body needs to get used to this style of mattress.
