I’m bad about talking in my sleep. Really bad. Some odd reason I’m always angry at something or someone (at least I’m told so).
This got me worried. What if I say the wrong thing to the wrong person in my sleep. Many TV shows have even made episodes about this. I remember an episode of Modern Family where Jay gets in Trouble with his wife over what he’s says in his sleep. She thought he was cheating but turns out it was nothing.
That type of thing worries me. I would never cheat, but what about an embarrassing story comes up that unleash the world?
So I wanted to know, should I worry about my sleep talking?
Why Do We Sleep Talk?
Sleep talking or also called “somniloquy” is where we talk in our sleep without really knowing we’re doing it. Its more common in males and children, but women can also be affected by it too.
The crazy part is that the voice or attitude is sometimes not reflective of yourself. This basically means you can have a British accent when sleep talking even if you never been to Britain before. Also if you’re a calm person you can have an angry sleep voice, this was my problem.
I would argue or be angry at someone even though I’m quite a calm person in normal life.
These moods and what you say is not normally yourself which also means in a court of law talking in your sleep usually doesn’t hold up.
Should You Worry
Sleep talking is not at all harmful unless its combined with other actions you don’t mean to do when you sleep. Like sleep hitting. The only thing you have to worry about with sleep talking is saying something stupid or embarrassing.
Worrying about saying something embarrassing can cause some to miss out on sleep because they’re afraid to got to sleep.
The good news is that most of the words that come out of peoples mouths when sleep talking is not really that easy to understand. Most of the time people mumble or say something that is just made up words. So not much to worry about.
Also when you talk in your sleep it usually only last for a few seconds. Its not like you’re giving a lecture here. So at worst its just you saying some pointless things for a few seconds.
What Causing it?
Usually what causes it can be just genetic. What you get from your parents can’t really be controlled.
Other times is just because you’re stressed. You might have a lot going on at work or school. Try to find ways to calm down before going to bed. Being Stressed was one of my reasons for talking in my sleep. The way I have found to calm down before bed is to watch some ASMR videos. These videos really do calm you down and puts me to sleep right away, I sleep like a rock too.
Here is some of my favorite ASMR videos to help me calm down before bed. Its best to listen to them with headphones on. You may not get relaxed by these videos, so check out YouTube to find your own AMSR videos that work for you.
