I’m a big fan of these simple and affordable platform bed frames. Just something about the simple look of a metal frame with wooden slats that makes a bedroom feel modern. The Handy Living Wood Slat Bed Frame fits that build very well.
This is a little review on the Handy Living Bed Frame where I’ll answer some of the common questions I get about this platform bed and others like it.
I’m not small guy, and a good secure bed frame is very important to me. I’m about 240 and I have no issues with it supporting me. They even state it can hold about 300 pounds per side of this bed frame. That should be more than enough for a couple on a queen size bed.
Foam or latex mattress
You can use a foam or latex mattress with this bed frame, that is what I would recommend using with it. I would avoid using a box spring or even a inner spring mattress.
It really doesn’t matter the thickness of the foam or latex mattress you use, but I recommend at least 8 inches or more.
Can you attach a headboard?
You can not connect a headboard to this bed frame. There is no holes or brackets to attach one. You could probably find a headboard that has ways to attach to a bed frame, but it would be easier to not have a headboard with this platform bed.
You can add bed risers to this bed frame, but most manufacturers of bed frames don’t want people putting bed risers under there frames.
Some will void the warranty if they know you use bed risers so its best to not use bed risers. It would be better to find a higher bed frame or one that supports box spring if you need your bed higher.
Does it slide easily?
I haven’t seen any issues with a mattress sliding around on this bed frame. The slats really do help to keep the mattress in place. The slats are bare wood which has enough friction to them to keep a mattress from sliding around.
How strong is it?
It is a very sturdy bed frame, even holds up to love movements you may encounter. I wouldn’t jump up and down on it or launch my self onto it, but I wouldn’t do that on any bed frame. Handy Living makes a good strong and study bed frame.
The gap between the slats?
The gap is about 3 inches between the slats. Some mattress requires you have a certain gap or less for laying the mattress on a frame.
Easy to disassemble?
Yes, quite easy to set up and take down. Great for people who move often or apartment living. Great if you need a bed frame for college too!
Storage under it
I have measured about 12 inches of clearance for storage boxes that can fit under this platform bed. You can fit quite a bit under it.
Do you need tools?
It does come with the basic Allen and screws that you would need to put it together. I still recommend getting a basic electric tool kit like this one to make your life easier. Just make sure to hand start even bolt before running it in with an electric drill.
Do not put an air mattress on this bed frame. The way an air mattress displaces its weight is different than a normal mattress and you could damage the bed frame. Only put foam or latex mattresses on this bed frame and NOT air mattresses.
