One of the more confusing things about mattresses is their thickness. You got some mattress that are 6 inches all the way up to some rare sizes at 20 inches or more.
So what does the thickness of a mattress mean? How thick should your mattress be?
The thickness of your mattress really depends on many things, from personal preference or even sleeping style.
To determine what thickness you need can really boil down to if you’re a back sleeper, side sleeper, or stomach sleeper. If you don’t know which one you are then the next time you wake up make note of what position you were in when you woke.
6 to 8 inch – Back Sleeper
The thicker a mattress is, especially foam and latex mattresses, the softer it usually gets. So if you sleep on your back you want something firmer, which a 6 to 8-inch mattress will deliver.
These mattresses have less “softer” foam in them. They have the single slab of normal hard foam and some even have a small soft layer to them which can be called the “memory foam”. The thicker the mattress the more “memory foam” or softer foams and softer latex layers it will have.
So if you like firm mattresses then stick to a foam or latex mattress under 8 inches in thickness. This is only a recommendation because everyone is different.
8 to 10 inches – Side Sleeper
If you’re a side sleeper then a mattress 8 to 10 inches works best for you. It gives you the correct amount of cradle for your side but enough support when you sleep.
This is also the happy medium, so if you don’t know which one to pick then go with a 8 to 10 inch mattress thickness. You really can’t go wrong, 8 to 10 inches is the best mattress depth.
10 to 15 inches – Stomach Sleepers
If you sleep on your stomach then something with more than 10 inches of thickness is golden for you. Also if you like a really soft memory foam mattress then the more thickness the better in most cases.
Also if you like a high bed then a thicker mattress is key.
Is a 10-Inch Mattress Thick Enough?
A 10-inch mattress is thick enough for most people. 10-inches is actually the standard and I often tell people who don’t know what size to get to go with a 10-inch mattress as you can’t go wrong.
