It’s going to be rare that a Latex Mattress sleeps too hot. What I often see is that people mistook a memory foam mattress for a Latex and that is why it’s warm.
Or they bought a mattress with only a little bit of Latex in it.
A 100% Natural Latex Mattress sleeps quite cool compared to many other mattress types.
But…. there are other factors to consider, and I want to talk about them.
The Foundation Is Wrong
We often blame the mattress for being warm, but it might not be the mattress at all.
I see it all the time; people put too much stuff under there beds.
And I know what you’re thinking – “who cares?”
Well, if you have too much stuff under your bed, you’re restricting the air flow. Many people even put old bedding and other soft materials that act as insulators.
The heat of your body radiates out, and if there is no airflow under the bed to carry the excess heat away, it could be getting trapped in the mattress. And that is why the mattress feels warm.
You’ll want to stick to platform bed frames. If heat is a real issue stick to the metal bed frames as they conduct heat the best. But overall make sure they have slats where the bed lays on so the air can pass through the mattress and through the bed frame.
Avoid placing anything under your bed and keep it open. Not only does it give better air flow but helps with cleaning the dust bunnies that collect. That is one thing we forget, a bunch of stuff under the mattress also collects dust. That dust can make us sick and never realize where it’s coming from. Keeping the space under the bed clear and vacuuming under it often is a good habit for everyone.
You could have fallen for a sales tactic. Latex is the best of the best when it comes to mattresses, and many manufacturers know this.
They’ll throw around latex to upsell the mattress but may only contain a small bit of latex. They often throw memory foam over the latex which gives it the warm feeling.
Memory foam is the cheaper material to use and is quite comfortable, but it sleeps hot. And since memory foam and latex feel the same when there is a cover over it, it can be hard to tell the difference.
Not Natural Latex
Another tactic is to sell you on latex and then give you latex, but there are 2 different types.
You have natural latex and synthetic latex.
Synthetic latex is going to sleep warmer than the natural or organic latex. Synthetic latex is not too far away from memory foam in design and making it. Making synthetic latex is cheaper and easier but it does not have the benefit of natural latex.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you may just be a person that naturally sleeps hot.
So what can you do?
The best thing you can do, and this may sound like the opposite thing you should do, but you should get a wool mattress pad.
I know wool sounds like it’s going to be hot but in fact, it’s not. Wool is what I call a super fabric. Wool keeps you cool when it’s hot and hot when its cold. Its perfect for regulating your body temperature. Out of all the gimmicks I’ve seen wool has been the only thing that keeps working like it should. There is no magic blanket that will make you sleep cool, but wool sure does come close.
I recommend checking out the SnugFleece Elite Wool Mattress Pad on Amazon.
I know the wool topper sounds like a crazy idea and I know they’re not the cheapest things around – but they do work. But if you want to see other options…
Make sure the bed sheets and even the mattress protector are breathable. If you’re using heavy fabrics that don’t breathe that could be why the latex mattress feels hot.
Even looking for cooling mattress protectors is ideal as they allow better airflow.
You can buy bed fans that pull in the cooler air from the floor to you.
This is ideal if one partner is warm and the other is not.
Avoid Big Meals Before Bed
If you eat a big meal or even warm food that could make you feel warmer when you sleep.
Your body has to go to work to break down the food, and that generates heat. That heat could be what you’re feeling especially if you consume a lot of soda or caffeine.
Another thing to look out for could be a medical condition. Maybe you’re taking medication that makes you feel warm. Maybe your body is going through changes like menopause?
It might be worth it to see a doctor especially if one partner doesn’t sleep warm and you do.
