I was putting away a memory foam mattress topper I use for when a guest comes over. As I was putting the topper away, I started to wonder if everyone knows the best way to store a mattress topper?
It may seem simple at first until you start to do it. And no, you don’t want to fold it!
First things first
Before you put the foam mattress topper away, you’re going to want to clean it. If you store the mattress topper with stains or dust then when you go to use it again it’s still going to be nasty.
Given enough time the dirt could get worse. We’re talking mold or who knows what growing for months until you need the topper again.
Roll it up
Some people like to fold their mattress toppers which is a big NO-NO! Folding puts too much stress on the creases and damages the foam.
What you want to do is roll the mattress topper up.
Here is an excellent video showing the best way to pack away a mattress topper…
Where do you get the plastic wrap?
The video showed us a guy rolling the mattress topper up and then placing it in a plastic bag. The bag was vacuumed sealed to remove any air and to make it easier to store.
They sell plastic moving bags for mattresses,* which will work for a mattress topper.
They also sell vacuum sealed bags. These bags are smaller than the moving bags for mattresses, but if you have a memory foam topper that is a size “Twin,” then you can make do with it.
Do not store a mattress topper unless it has some protective wrapping around it! Bugs, dust, water, and other nasty stuff can get trapped in it if you don’t put it in a bag. This is especially true if you store in a storage unit, attic, basement, or even a closet. No matter how clean you think it is, its not!
What about Latex and other different toppers?
For a latex topper, you do the same thing as you would do on a memory foam mattress topper.
Toppers like cotton are a bit more forgiving and can be folded unless told otherwise on the packaging or tag on the topper itself.
How long can you store a mattress toppers?
It would be best to remove the mattress topper from its plastic bag every 6 months to allow it to air out and inflate.
