Most of the mattresses you buy online will come compressed in a Box. This is to cut down on shipping cost and to make it easier to move around.
When it comes to memory foam or even latex mattresses, you’ll want to remove it from the box and unwrap it as soon as possible. It’s not good to get the mattress and then leave it in the box.
You do have some leeway of a couple of days or even a week or two. But I would not push it beyond a month. The highest I ever have seen a mattress manufacturer say it’s okay to leave a mattress in the original packaging was no more than 90 days, but every mattress is different. My golden rule is to get it out of the packaging as soon as possible in case there are any warranty issues.
What Happens If You Leave It In The Box?
To be honest, many mattresses will be all right if you leave it in the box. But the longer you leave it in there, the longer it will take for it to inflate back to its correct size.
If the mattress does become damaged, then it won’t inflate to its correct size at all. Plus, if you had waited too long you might miss out on the ability to return the mattress. If your mattress is not getting to its correct shape within a week, then talk to the manufacturer.
Don’t They Store The Mattresses In The Box
Some like to think that the mattress manufacturer makes a bunch of mattresses and then store them in a box til they ship, so it’s no problem if they do the same. This is not completely true; many mattress makers will compress the mattress a few days before shipping it to keep the mattress from being compressed too long.
You’ll be surprised by how quick they package the mattress up and then ship it out.
If the mattress maker did go ahead and get the mattress pre-made and stored them in boxes for weeks, then this would be an even greater reason to get it out of the package as soon as possible.
Don’t Forget This
You just bought a new mattress, and the chances of it getting dirty or wet are very high. Mistakes happen, and they happen often. Don’t let your new mattress get ruined, pick up a mattress protector like this one here* so that you can protect it from spills. Many of the modern day mattress protectors look and feel like normal bedsheets – so there is no excuse to not have one.
