What Is A Dust Mite
Dust mites are microscopic bugs that eat dead skin from humans or pets. Dust mites are actually harmless to humans unless you have an allergy to them. The people most likely to be affected by dust mites are children and the elderly, but many adults can be affected by them from an allergic reaction.
The good news is that they don’t carry any diseases.
Thousands of dust mites can live on one single mattress and one of those nasty buggers can create up to 20 poo particles in one day. The allergic reaction that people have to these bugs is from its waste. So if you’re allergic to them its due to their waste, makes you want to buy the mattress cover yesterday doesn’t it.
Dust mites will be mostly found on beds, but they can be found many other places. The other common places is the sofa, carpet, and rugs. Did you know that the dust mites can make there way to your cars upholstry too!
How To Get Rid Of Dust Mites
Dust mites love warm and humid areas. Anything over 70 degrees Fahrenheit and above 50% humidity is perfect for a dust mite to live. One way you can combat dust mites is to keep your home below 70 degrees which will also help to lower the humidity too. Also look into getting a dehumidifier and place it in the bedroom near the mattress.
An air purifier will work to remove and collect the dust mites and their waste. Avoid using an ozone generator as that is not effective against the dust mites. You need a HEPA filter air purifier to effectively remove the dust mites. The air purifier will need to be near the bed to be the most efficient, the bed is where you find the most dust mites.
The best air purifier for dust mites we could find is the GermGuardian AC4825. The great thing about this filter besides catching dust mites is that it also has a built-in UV light for killing airborne germs and spores. Also, the quietness of it is a nice feature that is a must if you plan on placing it near your bed.
Since we’re on the topic of air purifier it would be a good time now to replace your furnace filters with new ones that have the ability to catch allergens.
