Are Thick Mattresses a Scam?

I can’t go anywhere without seeing a new mattress coming out saying its over 8 inches thick. You got plush tops, pillow tops, super foam tops, super thick foam, and so many types of mattresses that are all these thick and cumbersome mattresses.

This made me ask, “are thicker mattresses really necessary?”.  Does a thicker mattress really mean we get a better mattress? Are thicker mattresses really worth the cost?

Not Really.

It gets to the point where a mattress can be too thick. Think about it, you only fall a few inches into most mattresses, so having that 15 inches of foam is really not necessary.

So why do mattress companies keep making thicker mattresses every year? That is because people think they need a mountain of a mattress to get a good night sleep. So the mattress companies will keep making them because we keep buying them.

So Why Should You Care?

Why? Because the more material they use the more they can charge for it. People have this idea that because it’s thicker you should pay more because you think you’re getting more. When in reality the mattress only goes up a little to make so the company will make more by charging for more.

Adding a few inches of foam doesn’t cost as much as you might think, but they sure are going to charge a lot more for it.

So you’ll see more and thicker mattresses coming to the market because that is where the money is.

So What Should You Buy?

What you should buy is a very open-ended question. If you really enjoy the look and feel of a thicker mattress then please get one. It’s your money and you should get what you want.

But do you need a thick mattress? No. Anything less than 8 inches and more than 4 inches will do most people just fine.

The perks are the smaller and thinner mattress are sometimes cheaper than some of its counterparts. They can be easier to move around too since they’re thinner and lighter than other super thick mattress. You can also find bed sheets that fit it better. It’s better to have a bed sheet that is too big then not big enough if it’s too big then just use bed sheet suspenders to keep it in place.

Do You Have Some Examples of Beds

I do have some examples of the low profile beds you can get. There is many different styles and material they’re made of. I’m a big fan of the memory foam style.

One example is the tataME Bed Low Profile Cooling Memory Foam Mattress. The tataMe mattress is about 5 inches thick, more than enough for most people. It’s simple and easy to use. The best part about it is that you can flip it to either side if you want soft or firm support. This is something that most of the thicker mattresses don’t do.

Another option is the Signature Sleep Memoir 6-Inch Memory Foam Mattress. Signature Sleep is a little bit more known in the online world for there foam mattress. I actually use one for my bed, its a 10 inch one and I know I’m going against what I said but from sleeping on an 8 inch and now a 10 inch I really can’t tell the difference. The Memoir Mattress I’m talking about is only 6 inches, which is fine for just about anyone one. If you need a good simple mattress then go with this one. No need to over think it.

One More Thing

I know I sound like a broken record, but people please get yourself a mattress protector*. It’s a simple investment that can help keep you mattress good for years. Many mattress companies will actually void the warranty if a stain is found on the mattress.

No one is perfect so getting a mattress protector just makes sense.
