Do you ever wake up and feel even more tired than when you went to bed? This could be a sign that your mattress is making you tired and wearing you out.
A worn-out mattress can make it hard for a person to find sleep even though they feel like they slept all night. A bad mattress will make you toss and turn all night long. This tossing and turning can make you feel tired in the morning.
Even allergies can make you feel tired in bed!
How to not feel tired
The best way to not feel tired after waking up is to either get a new mattress or make your current one more comfortable.
Here are some signs that a new mattress is needed
- The mattress is over 7 years old.
- Your mattress is starting to sag.
- You wake up tired and in pain.
- The mattress is falling apart.
- You have a hard time falling asleep.
If you fall into most of these issues above especially if your mattress is over 7 years old (or even 5 years old), then it’s time for a new mattress.
Allergies
Allergies can also make you feel tired after you wake up. Things like dust mites can infest a bed and if you’re allergic it can really put a strain on you.
If you wake up with allergy-like symptoms then pick up a mattress encasement to protect your mattress and give you better sleep.
A new mattress is more affordable than you think
Before we get into how to make your old mattress more comfortable, I want to address the issue of getting a new bed. I know many people might be thinking that a new mattress is just cost too much. This is true if you get your mattress from a department store.
There exist a way to buy a mattress without the need of annoying salespeople and going to mattress stores. You can purchase a mattress online, and they tend to be more affordable and a lot easier to deal with.
A lot of the mattresses you buy online will be memory foam which is a lot better if you have any pains or wake up tired. It will take a couple of days to get used to a memory foam mattress if you never been on one but its well worth it in the long run.

How to make your mattress more comfortable
If you don’t fall into the new mattress category, then the next best option is to get a mattress topper or pad. Let’s list off the two to see which one fits your needs the best.
Mattress Pad
- Makes a mattress softer.
- Gives it a more plush feel.
- Some Pads have wool which works great to keep you cool when it’s hot and warm when its cold.
Mattress Topper
- Can make a mattress firmer.
- Some toppers can soften the mattress too.
- Gives better support to the hips, shoulders, and other joints.
- The denser the foam the firmer it is.
- Toppers are wildly available.
- You can get some toppers that have GEL which helps to keep it cooler.
Most people will go with a Mattress Topper and will be happy with it. I’m more of a fan of the wool mattress pads since they feel wonderful and sleep the great. If you ever wake up tired and groggy then consider a topper or pad with wool.
The mattress might not be the problem
You got to think of all the possibilities if you wake up tired. It might not be your mattress, and it could be something else in the room or even outside the room.
-It could be your alarm clock’s blinding light keeping you awake. I have a post on how to dim your alarm clock here.
-It could be your TV that you leave on and the flashing lights could spark you awake at night without you realizing it.
-It could even be an early morning trashman and his truck from afar just making enough noise to wake you up.
There are so many possibilities as to what it could be that it’s up to you to figure them out. You might be asking how do you figure it out when you’re asleep.
Simple! You can buy something that tracks your sleep. A Fitbit can track your sleep through the night and show you when you become active. You’ll want to look for patterns, for example, if you wake at the same time or move at the same time then you know something is up.
I even see some people take it as far as using motion-sensitive cameras that turn on when they move so that they can visually see what is going on. Sounds crazy but if a light shines on you from passing cars and it causes you to wake then you’ll know how to fix the issue.
It’s kind of fun to experiment and see what is making you not sleep so well at night and making you feel tired in the morning.
This whole tracking is not necessary for most, and a new mattress will solve the issue. I would suggest a new mattress as I have seen many people with old mattress torture themselves because they feel like a new one would be too expensive. Buying a mattress online is a lot better and more affordable option than most people think.
Turn Off Electronics
You should avoid using computers, phones, or tablets in bed. These could be tricking your brain into thinking it’s okay to answer some calls or do some emails.
Your bed should only be used for sleeping and not as a home office.
